Dr Stepan Stepanenko is a political analyst who pairs a strong academic background with practical experience in British politics and work with opposition organisations in post-Soviet states. Drawing on a solid grasp of history and a focus on Eastern European and post-Soviet affairs, he has contributed to think tanks and organisations championing democracy and countering totalitarian regimes. His dedication to political outreach and fostering democratic values has earned him respect across academic and political spheres.

In August 2024, the Russian Federation sanctioned Dr Stepanenko for his work with the Russian and Belarusian opposition, underscoring his commitment to transparency and security in the region. He put together and organised a high-profile conference of the Russian opposition in the UK, bringing together multiple opposition groups to chart the movement’s future and bolster support for Ukraine. As a member of the Belarusian opposition’s Coordination Council, he served on the foreign affairs committee, shaping discussions on regional security and international relations. He eventually left the Council due to concerns about organisational transparency and continues to advocate through other channels.

Closer to home, Dr Stepanenko joined a political party in his teens and stood for election in the London Borough of Barnet, reflecting his early commitment to public service.
